Severn Gorge :: New Technology :: Blast Furnaces :: Coalbrookdale :: Maps :: Charcoal Blast Furnace
The Beckley Furnace, in East Canaan, Connecticut, is typical of the charcoal blast furnaces that once flourished in the northeastern U.S. The surrounding wooden buildings are long gone. A few furnaces, like this one, have been preserved - the truest legacy in the New World of the medieval past. Americans ironmasters were slower than Europeans to shift from charcoal to coke, owing to the abundance of forests. Order "The Iron Bridge" on-line ~~ to the top ~~© copyright David Morse, 2003-2008 |
